WANTING MORE

November 4, 2015

Why is it that some people could not seem to be satisfied with what they have and still keep on wanting and asking for more?  No matter how much money they make, how many diplomas and trophies they get, still they crave for the next big thing, for the next big payoff.  Isn’t it enough that our lifetimes are filled with all the adventures we could ever hope for, physically or emotionally?  Is life and the world not enough?

I notice some who, even if they are not entitled to or cannot yet afford something, if they see somebody else enjoying it, would gladly give up a limb or a foot just to keep up.  Still, others resort to stealing just so they could enjoy something they were not meant to have.

It is not wrong to have dreams.  I for one have too many of them, a few achieved, and more still are up in the air.  But one should be content with whatever their situation in life is, at the moment.  For we are exactly where we are at any given time, because it is exactly where we needed to be.

The root of sadness, resentment and regret are discontent and a lack of acceptance for what life has dished out on us.  Jawaharlal Nehru said that “the hand we are dealt with is determinism; the way we play it is free will”.

When it comes to finances, truly the Apostle Paul said it best, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  And elsewhere, “whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.”

One can never question one’s lot in life, because that has been predetermined for him.  But it is a test of character for a person to rise above the injustices and adversities in life, in order to gain a measure of success in their career or home life, however humble or complicated these may be.

We should therefore look at our motivations whenever we are tempted to want and ask for more.  Would it be for sharing with others, or would it just be to feed our own bloated egos?  Wanting more would never be a problem, as long as the more that is received will form part of the plenty that goes around to help others who are in need.
